Self Portrait in Glasses

A bit of a self-portrait taken today at Barry's Rose Garden Party with the help of Webdiva and her shiny sunglasses. Cropped and auto-levels and auto-contrast applied. ISO 200 1/90th, F-stop unknown (manual 50mm prime lens used).

Egads it's almost 2am!

Stop the Storm (Photo of the Day)

Well, Muckhead suggested we have a photo a day again, and it sounded good to me. Here are my contributions, taken while heading out to New West to visit friends after work, just on the Surrey side of the bridge. I was playing around with some modifications and found that I had three favorites after the fact. The first is the "normal" image, second is converted to black and white using the Lab color technique, the third is the result of some funky playing around with contrast. Image is ISO 200, 1/750th at F10.

Read on for the rest... (in consideration for the non-broadband people).

Now that's a Happy Cat

Last night the fire alarm in the building went off at 5am, which sucked. Getting dressed and going and standing in the front of the building to wait for someone to turn off the alarm wakes you up more than enough to make it hard to get back to sleep right away, like you could if you just get a glass of water or something. When I finally did get back to sleep I had some messed up dreams as well. It could have been much worse though, A was up till something like 4am doing a sewing project and only was in bed an hour before the fire alarm went off.

When I got up 50 minutes after the alarm clock first went off (sorry boss, that's why I'm late), I found that Corny had once again taken advantage of a sunbeam coming through the window onto the bed. This time I was fast enough to catch a few good ones of him with it, playing around with locking the focus on the sunbeam (and underexposing the cat) or on the cat and washing out the rest from the sun. He of course left before I could see the results on the computer screen and try again.

The shot I have up above is actually a copy/inspired-by one from a photography magazine that was focused just on an outstretched paw in macro mode which threw the rest of the cat out of focus, and had a really cool look. This one though I think definately shows a happy cat.

Flags

This morning I give you not only a scary dream but also a nice image. This was taken while in the car waiting to turn off of S. Fraser to go to the gym yesterday. I made minor modifications in photoshop to the original, a bit of cropping and an unsharp mask to make the area in the mirror stand out a bit nicer. It's not the image I wanted exactly, but the light turned green at an in oportune moment and I had to actually move from the middle of the road. Maybe a minor photo project to put myself on would be cool stuff in the car mirror, or mirrors in general.

Ups, Downs, and a Photo

Well, the arcterex.net box (naked) got an upgrade last night from a PII-200 to a Celeron 533 (the one that ran UFies.org for ages) so it was down for a bit last night. Today UFies.org will be down (and therefor mail, etc) due to Paralynx moving to a new office around 6th and 6th (or so they say). The box was shut down a few minutes ago and should show up again in a couple of hours (<fingers crossed>). I just hope that the bounced mail goes through to the secondaries. Apparently the IP changes for arcterex.net haven't propagated yet (still!) and pinging it from work here I still get:

[alan@localhost alan]$ ping arcterex.net
PING arcterex.net (24.76.217.191) 56(84) bytes of data.
From rc1nr-pos15-0.wp.shawcable.net (66.163.73.129) icmp_seq=1 Time to live exceeded

Not sure whats up with that, the change went in a couple of days ago. Stupid DNS servers. The IP should be resolving to 24.82.174.131

Anyway, on your right you'll see a very happy cat. Corny really enjoys stealing my office chair... he'll jump up on it and roll over on it with a very distinct "you will now scratch my belly stupid monkey" look. He also seems to like the spinning he gets from his momentum. I managed to snap this one of him by setting the camera mode to the preset "slow" mode, resulting in a 1s exposure time at f/4.5. I tried a few other shots but couldn't get the same cool effect. Oh, in the gallery for yesterday there are some really nice cloud shots and panoramas that I got coming of work in the evening. Man I love this area. Note that the gallery pointed to is probably going to be really slow generating the thumbnails... that's my computer, not yours, and the fact all the images in there are at full size and not reduced size like a sane person would put in.

Picture of the Day

My contribution to the Daily Photo, though it doesn't seem daily anymore. This is a shot from a walk a few days ago where I thought that taking a picture of my feet would be sort of cool. In an effort to blur things and get the impression of speed a bit more I increased the exposure time. It didn't turn out exactly like I wanted, but this one was a cool version of the shot.

Daily Photo

Todays image is from a walk around the block I took at lunch yesterday. This is a flowerbox of sorts at one of the industrial companies behind us. As a bonus here's something I spotted on the way to work yesterday that might amuse all ya'll.

Daily Image - office shadows

Well, Darren put out the challenge to the folks to post an image a day if you have access to a digicam, so here is my contribution. Not hugely interesting I suppose, but my favorite from the mess I took this morning and last night. This is the view out my office window first thing in the morning, with the sunlight streaming through and sending the shadows of the various things hung from the window onto the drapes. Next step is to set up a proper photoblog like Etan has.
